A freight forwarder is a broker of space and paperwork rather than a carrier. It does not own the aircraft, the ship or usually even the lorry: it buys capacity in bulk, resells it to you, and takes on the customs entries, the documents and the handovers between legs. What a forwarder is actually selling
Three things bundled: rate, paperwork and coordination. The rate is bought at volumes you cannot reach on your own. The paperwork is the customs entry at each end plus the transport documents, which is the part that most often goes wrong and the part a first-time shipper most underestimates. The coordination is making the legs meet, so a lorry does not arrive at a port after a cut-off. How to compare two forwarders honestly
Ask both for the same terms before you ask for a price. A quote that is port to port and a quote that is door to door are not the same product, and the second is routinely thirty to fifty per cent higher for reasons that have nothing to do with the freight rate. Then ask what is excluded: customs entry fees, destination handling, storage after a free period, and any charge for a correction to a declaration you got wrong.
What a forwarder does not protect you from
Your commodity codes and your declared values are yours. A forwarder will file what you tell it, and an incorrect code or an understated value is your liability at the border, not the forwarder's, however clearly it came from your supplier. The second thing is timing: a forwarder can tell you the sailing and the cut-off, but a shared container waits until it is full, and no amount of coordination changes that.
