Pallet delivery costs: what a quote is actually built from, and how to pallet delivery quote compare two numbers that look nothing alike
No company in this record publishes a pallet rate, and that is not an omission: pallet work is quoted per consignment because the variables that set the price are specific to the load. What can be set out is exactly which variables those are, and once you know them you can put two quotes onto the same basis, which is the only way to compare them meaningfully.

How to compare pallet quotes on the same basis
- Fix the footprint and the height. Quarter, half or full, each with its own maximum height. A quarter pallet loaded too tall is charged as a half, so measure the loaded height.
- State the gross weight including the pallet. Networks quote on gross rather than net, and an understated weight is the usual cause of a post delivery adjustment.
- Give the full destination postcode. Highlands, islands and some rural areas carry longer transit and higher rates, and a quote given on a partial postcode will change.
- Ask what the service window excludes. An overnight promise normally covers mainland postcodes only and depends on an early collection cut off.
The five variables that set a pallet price
Footprint first: quarter, half or full, each with a maximum height and weight. Then the loaded height, since exceeding the band's limit moves the consignment up a size. Then gross weight including the pallet itself. Then the destination postcode area. Then the service window.
Change any one of those and the quote changes, which is why two prices given without all five specified are not comparable. Most disputes about pallet invoices come down to a height or a weight that was estimated rather than measured before booking.
Why quotes vary so widely for the same load
Pallet networks are cooperatives of regional hauliers, and a consignment is priced partly on how conveniently it fits the members' existing flows. A pallet travelling against the prevailing direction of freight on a lane costs more than one travelling with it, and that varies by network.
This is why the same load can attract quotes several tens of pounds apart from operators who are all being honest. It also means the cheapest network for one lane is frequently not the cheapest for another, so a single preferred supplier is rarely optimal for a business shipping to varied destinations.
The charges that are not in the headline
Failed delivery, where nobody is available to receive or there is no forklift or tail lift access. Waiting time beyond a short free period. Redelivery. Storage if a consignment is refused. And any surcharge for a booking-in requirement at the delivery site, which many commercial premises impose.
Ask specifically about tail lift availability at the delivery end. A consignment arriving at a site without a forklift, on a vehicle without a tail lift, cannot be unloaded, and the resulting failed delivery and redelivery is one of the more expensive mistakes on pallet work.
Preparing the pallet so the quote holds
Keep the load inside the base on all four sides, because overhang is a refusal and damage risk on every network. Load heaviest at the bottom, use corner boards under the strapping and wrap so the load and pallet move as one object.
Label at least two sides, since the side facing the operator varies. Photograph the finished pallet before collection: on a network where a consignment is handled at several hubs, evidence of how it left you is what makes a damage claim payable rather than arguable.
Questions people ask about this
- How much does pallet delivery cost?
- No company in this record publishes a pallet rate. Quotes are built per consignment from footprint, loaded height, gross weight, destination postcode area and service window.
- Why do pallet quotes for the same load differ so much?
- Pallet networks are cooperatives of regional hauliers, and a consignment is priced partly on how well it fits members' existing flows. A load travelling against the prevailing direction on a lane costs more.
- What is not included in a pallet quote?
- Failed delivery, waiting time beyond a short free period, redelivery, storage on refusal, and any booking-in surcharge the delivery site imposes.
- What happens if the delivery site has no forklift?
- The consignment cannot be unloaded unless the vehicle has a tail lift, and the failed delivery plus redelivery is one of the more expensive errors on pallet work. Confirm access before booking.
